DJ's Birthday

DJ turned 22 yesterday! HoHo!

I arrived first at his condominium apartment at Cashew Heights. While waiting for the rest to come, he showed me Final Fantasy X's ending clips. Colourful and elaborate, the clips fully utilised Playstation 2's graphical powerness.

First to arrive after me is Ben. Followed by Desmond, the three girls, Pinhui & Vivien and last but not least, Xuiwen.

The charcoal's burning hot thanks to Ben and Desmond wonderful fire starting skills. The girls helped to cook the food. Dj's sister lined up the chicken wings in the skewers expertly. Ben brought a nice bottle of XO Cognac which was appreciated by everyone. The only thing missing is the birthday cake. It wasn't sorely missed but somehow, I quietly felt that no birthday is complete without blowing candles on the cake. Nonetheless it was a enjoyable birthday party.

Ex-JSS students smiles for the camera.

We laugh, joke, shout and went crazy; not actually but would like to think of it as I like. The party mood was in the air.

F4 enjoying a rare day out.

We drank; the 350ml bottle of hard liquor was more than enough to go about, not many hardcore drinkers around.

Birthday boy was elevated with ecstasy.

We ate; self-declared Chef Wong (Desmond) made us his speciality - grilled chicken wings. They were well-cooked... honest.

Sunday girls!: (top left to right)Liyun, Wanqing, Shuhui; (bottom left to right)Xuiwen, Vivien, Pinhui.

We took photos; 3 cameras were snapping away. Ben, Vivien and me all brought our happy moments capturing device.

All good things got to come to an end. School and work beckons the next day. Cashew Heights went quiet after 10pm.

Badminton

Have you tried to book a badminton court this few days? Nearly all around the Chua Chu Kang, Yew Tee, Jurong East, Bukit Batok and Clementi area are fully booked. Lucky me just managed to book a court on a Sunday afternoon. It seems like Singaporeans are inspired by the achievements of Ronald Susilo and have dug out their dust-ridden rackets for a smash or two.

Three straight hours of play at Yew Tee community centre with Yunhong, Xinda, Hongtao, Cai and Amos today. Perfect tag-team partner with Xinda resulting in only one loss in ten matches. Damn shiok! But arm a bit aching liao. Haha.

Routine

A preview of a routine day in the life of 'Me, Myself & Weida'.

Wake up early in the morning at 6:20am. Sometimes overslept like on Tuesday, when I was late for work for the first time. Reach bus stop at 6:50am. Look at this pretty office lady. She's always dressed in black. Then there's another lady from the Republic of Singapore Air Force. A cute third sergeant. Haha. There are some other schools girls whom I always meet too at the bus stop.

Reach camp before 8am. Put bag. Fall in. Dismiss. Buy breakfast from 'Ah Lao'. Eat breakfast. Attend daily morning meeting. Try to dodge 'arrows'. Do work if unavoidable.

Have lunch. Talk cock with Zhenguo, Stanley, Yunhong or Kelvin. Inhale second hand smoke. Buy Heaven & Earth green tea(favourite drink) from vending machine.

Resume work after lunch. Most of the time no work liao. ORD mood already, so trying to avoid work when possible. It is time the newbies get working.

Wait for 5pm. Fall out. Make the hour trip home. Have dinner. My current maid's cooking sucks. Watch TV. Check email. Update Blog when the mood is right. Check Friendster account. Check soccer news. Check online fantasy soccer account. Listen to music. Too lazy nowadays to download news songs, so got to settle for oldies.

Occasionally would drive out at night for supper with Stanley or coffee with Kelvin or snooker with Alex.

That's it. A very routine day in an unhappening week.

Alien Vs Predator

Watched the movie at Jurong Point today. With Ben and DJ. It is well.. not bad. But at first the film seems kind of blur and cheap looking, until the aliens and Predators appear. The aliens and predator looks as real as in their previous movies.

Went for a coffee bean break after the show. Discussed about DJ's birthday celebrations. Met up with Pinhui unexpectedly. Went separated ways after Ben had to bring dinner home. Met up with Zhenguo for dinner and coffee. Super hungry as have not eaten since early afternoon. It was 8pm by now. Had dinner at the foodcourt. Then went to a kopitiam somewhere off the shopping mall for a talk cock session.

Hitch a ride in Kevin's Nissan home. Exchange news en route home. He's doing pretty well. Quite a relax studying schedule. Wish him all the best in his studies.

White Strawberry

There is this girl whom resemble a white strawberry. Rare, precious and treasured. Rosy white, fresh-looking, tasty on the outside, slightly sour on the inside. You want to have it, but you are unsure. It looks like something you have seen before. It looks like something you had known before. But there is something mysterious about her. You do not know what it is. You are stumbled for words when asked to describe her. But you like her. You love her with all your heart.

But she chose someone else. You are hurt.. deeply. No one understands as much. No ones knows. You do not wish to let anyone know. It would be too troublesome to explain everything. And some things, like love, cannot be explained. It would just complicate matters. And so you keep everything to yourself. You once read, things hurt only as deep as you would allow it. Can the hurt really be controlled? Can you really stop the tears just by telling yourself to? You do not know. You do not understand how the girl could have a change of heart overnight. Perhaps the decision was not made overnight. Perhaps the girl felt bad. There are many questions, but not many answers.

You pick yourself up. No one knows how badly you have fell. You could not let the wound show. If you do, there would be questions. Questions you do not wish to answer. Questions which would only make things worse. You want the girl to be happy. Even though her decisions made you sad. Things don't always go the way you wanted. Sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you are not. Many times, people suffer not because of luck, but they would like to blame it on luck. Can you say you are lucky to have love? Is it a coincidence? More questions you do not have answers to.

You found out that the girl has found the love she feels is right for her. You are not sure. You do not know much. You still hate her for her turn of heart. You are still upset she had chosen someone over you. You want her back, but you know that is highly unlikely. You carry on with your life. You try to make the best out of whatever little you have. Yes.. you try..

Snooker

Had a round of snooker with Alex at West Coast RC today. Just to keep up our average standard of play. It was very crowded and we had to wait for a whole hour to get a table. Those idiots with membership kept jumping the queue. From third, we were pushed back to fifth in line. Met Yongping, Damien and Minsoon coincidentally too. Had not seen Minsoon since secondary school graduation. Saw Yongping and Damien occasionally at the billiard saloon. Both have their personal cue. Haha. Damien's cue is quite colourful.

P.S: The drinks are rather steep there. $1.30 for a normal coffee/tea & $1.50 for Milo.

Touching Story

Title: The Other Woman

After 21 years of marriage, I discovered a new way of keeping alive the spark of love. A little while ago I had started to go out with another woman. It was really my wife's idea. "I know that you love her." She said one day, taking me by surprise. "But I love YOU," I protested. "I know, but you also love her."

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.

"What's wrong, are you well?" She asked. My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. "I thought that it would be pleasant to pass some time with you." I responded. "Just the two of us." She thought about it for a moment then said, "I would like that very much."

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited at the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel's. "I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed." She said, as she got into the car. "They can't wait to hear about our meeting."

We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Half way through the entree, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips. "It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small," She said. "Then it's time that you relax and let me return the favor," I respond. During the dinner we had an agreeable conversation nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other's life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.

As we arrived at her house later, she said "I'll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you". I agreed.

"How was your dinner date?" Asked my wife when I got home. "Very nice. Much more so than I could have imagined," I answered.

A few days later my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn't have a chance to do anything for her. Some time later I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined. An attached note said: "I paid this bill in advance. I was almost sure that I couldn't be there but, never-the-less, I paid for two plates - one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you."

At that moment I understood the importance of saying, in time: "I LOVE YOU" and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than your family. Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off to "some other time".

WARP!

Wednesday

Embarked on a journey to paradise

On the coach to Genting, I thought of many things.. including her. I had forgotten about her, really.

Thursday

Walked the walk of heaven

A slight chill at 16 degrees Celsius, the fogged mountain represents paradise.

Stepped on the red carpet of Monte Carlo, a puny $125 ringgit in winnings is enough to satisfy this mortal.

Friday

Shopped with angels

Travelled south to the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. Shop, shopped, shopping. It is in 'truly Asia' style that this place is explored. Not forgetting the marketplace, where negotiating skills were tested to the maximum.

Saturday

Danced with celestial immortals

The clubbing scene is somewhat similiar to hometown. Think M.S., Zouk, Sparks, Chinablack and Boat Quay all in one place. Laid out Mohamed Sultan style, but bigger. The crowd is in thousands, Cantonese speaking and drives a Proton.

Clubs:
  • Atmosphere - One of the cleaner clubs around. It is about the size of Zouk. Cover charge at RM40 (1 free drink). Music: House. Crowd: Mature youth.
  • Warp - This is the K.L. version of Sparks, double storey. Drugs avaliable here. Buy drinks to gain entrance. RM20 for a house pour. RM50++ for jug of beer. Music: Cantonese pop, techno remix. Crowd: ah bengs and lians.
  • BeachClub - Popular and reputable club in K.L. with outdoor seats, this club is decorated beach-themed. Cover: $28 (1 free drink). Music: House. Crowd: Mixture of young adults and expatriates.

Sunday

Returned to earth

Packed up and headed home. Not forgetting to smuggle cigarettes of course.

Disappointing Day

Slept the entire day for the promised happening activity tonight, but in the end it is disappointing. Organiser down with tummy upset. 1 short of 4. Activity cancelled. Sheer disappointment.

NDP

It is a beautiful display of fireworks isn't it?

Preparation for NDP

On the eve of the country's birthday, I was at the Kallang Stadium fastening cable ties for the big day. This is the first of 9 days which I do not have to report to camp.

8am. Bought 4 cups of hot drinks at MacDonalds. Walked from Kallang MRT station to the stadium. What a beautiful morning.

8:30am - Arrived at the stadium and began tucking in on my breakfast. A nice 1st sergeant bought 'chwee kuey' for the us.

9am - 11:30am - Started work after breakfast. First, carry all the equipment, fireworks and cables from the top of the stadium to the stage. Next is the assembly of the fireworks onto a custom-made wooden crate-like rack. Began cutting the wires, testing the fireworks, connecting the wires and finally securing them onto the rack. The racks are hidden at the very front of the stage. Three different types of fireworks are used at the stage. There is also the one which throws out the confetti. It is shaped like a badminton shuttlecock holder, but half the length.

11:30am - 12:30pm - Time for a well-deserved break. been tanning under the sun for the entire morning. Found shade under the side entrance. Lunch is as usual; KFC 2 piece chicken and a whip-potato.

12:30pm - 4pm - Resumed work. The stage is completed by then. Next up is the fireworks to be mounted on the metal pillars beside the stage. Total of 5 to be completed. Another round of tanning. The sun is blazingly hot. There were not much workers around as compared to last week. We did our work pretty much alone. We were glad when all is completed. Now for the real thing tomorrow..

Another accident

This time it is real. Another red mark on my driving report card again. Haizz.. I must be the unluckiest probation plate driver.

On Friday morning, I had to attend this National Day Observance Ceremony at my headquarters camp on Bukit Timah Hill. I drove to camp with my father (he will drive it back). There is bus ferry service at the foot of the hill for those without their personal transport. I did not want to cramp with the guys. As the road up is a narrow, one lane each direction uphill path, I proceed with caution.

I reached a series of curvy S bends and slowed down to about 30km/h. I could only see 5 metres of the road ahead due to the blind spot created by the bend. Suddenly, the returning ferry bus (size of normal SBS bus) came from the opposite direction and cut into my lane. The fucking bus driver seems to ignore the presence of my car and drove into more than one-thrid of my lane. I swerved my car left to avoid a head on collision. My car wheels went into the grass patch, car body above the wheel brushed against the metal railings that line the road and the bus missed my right mirror by 2 inches.

The contact with the metal railings took away two inches worth of paint off my car. Can I say fuck the bus driver? Can I say I am unlucky? Can I say I am inexperience? I think I can only say I am inexperience. Argh... the damage is done. The wheels are intact, the rest of the car body is unharmed. Life goes on...

Took Kelvin's rented car for a spin today; he asked me to return it for him. Lost my way en route to Bishan. With DJ travelling with me, we went on the SLE and exit through Yio Chu Kang. Somehow fumbled to Sengkang and saw the uncompleted section of the Sengkang LRT. Realised my mistake and u-turned into SLE again. Exited through Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 and went past AMK Mrt station towards Bishan. Finally reached the destination when the fuel gauge went red.

Went to Orchard next. No particular purpose there, just to walk among the crowd I guess. Saw a mini fashion show beside The Heerens, sponsored by a brand call 'RE'. Yup, I have never heard of it before too. Next up is Takashimaya S.C.. Nothing special there, just the usual. It is selling toys now at the basement floor. Then we saw Pinhui eating at MacDonald's with her friend. (To Pinhui: You were wearing white and skirt. Why didn't we say hi? Coz I think you didn't wanna see us too. And you know what? Ziyan was there too. Bet you didn't know that. She didn't dine in coz the place was full.)

Next we saw Winnie on the first floor, the section where they sell ladies' cosmetic and perfume. She was working and we didn't wanna disturb her so we just went pass quietly. The white uniform looks neat. Headed home after that. Its late, I gotta get enough rest for heavy duty work tomorrow at National Stadium. The following Monday is a big day and everyone be sure to catch the celebration live. You might see a familiar face around. ;)

Driving day

Thanks to my father being on medical leave for a couple of days, I was able to use the car during the day. First stop, West Coast Recreational Center. Snooker with Alex in the afternoon followed by our usual tea time. This time, it is a little different. Instead of at our usual spot at a kpoitiam in Clementi, we took-away some pancake and had our high-tea at another kopitiam in Bukit Batok central. I think that is the difference when you have your personal transport.

At the kopitiam in Bukit Batok, a mobile salesman was trying to peddle some perfume to two girls sitting beside us. Just then, another Malay guy approached us for a $2 dollars donation to some charity organisation we have never heard before. We declined. Then he moved on to the next table and asked the salesman for donation. It was quite hilarious. Here are two person trying to get money out of each other. In the end, they both exchanged details about their profession and well.. I didn't take any further notice.

Next stop after I bought dinner for my family, is to fetch Mum from work. I had not eaten dinner as I was waiting to dine with Shijie and Alex. Well.. she let me waited for 50 minutes till 9:30pm before she appeared below her office at People's Park Complex. I rushed her home and got a scolding for speeding. I think she is too use to my father's slow pace.

Next, I rushed to Alex's place as I was starving to death. He was starving too. Then I speeded to Shijie's place where we had dinner nearby. My mood was better after dinner was settled. A hungry man is an angry man.. that is true. Next up is to search for love peas. Well.. well.. somebody had an idea of making a bottle of love peas as a gift to a girl. And well.. well.. it was thought that the greens behind Wheellock Place was full of such seeds, but it was not to be. Do love seeds bloom in selected seasons too? I have no idea but it seems like Fenz could solve the problem so we headed for some tasty beancurd at Selegie. We were in need of refreshments.

I stopped at the roadside just in front of the beancurd stall where cars usually parked illegally but conveniently. Just across the road was a couple of Mr Nice Policemen staring straight at me (and my car). Sucks.. I moved away immediately and found a parking space along Prinsep Place. When we reached the stall, a car across the road was booked and the car owner, a girl, was all fussed up at the summon. A cool $120 or so dollars blown just like that.

Went home after the beancurd session. Tired.. arhh.... gotta prepare for this stupid Mational Day Obeservance Parade tomorrow morning. Seeya later. Duty on Friday so no blog. =)

Accident

Nearly had a car accident this afternoon. Was driving my father to Bukit Batok Community Centre and nearly collided with a cab. First I must say that it is not my fault. Even my father, with over 20 year's experience, agrees that it is the cab's fault. The details are like this.

It was about 2pm and traffic was heavy on the road. I was first in my lane going to turn right in a cross junction. As there was a TIBS bus in the opposite direction going to turn right (from the bus's direction), I did not dash across to turn right. I positioned my car in the waiting area where cars wait when doing a right turn. I could not see the cars from the opposite direction as the bus was blocking my view on the on-coming traffic. I waited patiently for quite a long time before the bus finally moved and I was able to see the on-coming traffic. I saw many vehicles on the opposite direction. The traffic light turned amber. It was the cue for traffic to stop. It was also the cue for me to turn as the right turn arrow would light up soon.

My father told me to be cautious and make the turn slowly (he has this impression that I am a dangerous driver). I saw this cab moving in a rather fast speed for a car that should slow down upon seeing the amber light. I proceed slowly and took my foot off the brake pedal. My car was already on the edge of the cab's path if he is going straight. Well, damn! The cab decided to beat the red light and went straight at me. I saw it immediately and e-braked. The cab thought I was going to make the turn and stomped on his brake too. The Anti-Braking-System(ABS) on his car was put to good use.

The screeching sound made by the tyres was what you would expect to be. EeEeeEEEEEeEeeee! The cab used 5 metres to come to a complete halt from approximately 50km/h. That's the braking power of a Toyota Crown. Neat eh? Haha. Anyway, I was feeling calm and composed because I had no intention to make the turn anyway. The passenger on the cab must have been scared stiff. My father was a little nervous. But he knew that it wasn't my fault. The cab grinded to a complete halt about 3 metres away from my car and really, there wasn't any chance of an accident occurring.

All the other drivers on the road must have stopped to look at the cab, and me. I allowed the cab to pass before making my turn. Although it wasn't my fault, my dad explained to me that I should always be on the look-out for danger on the road. When a life is taken, it doesn't really matter whose fault it is. So drivers out there, be warned.

Tuesdays With Weida

I don't wanna lose
I don't wanna use you
Just to have somebody by my side

And I don't wanna hate you
I don't wanna take you
But I don't wanna be the one who cry

That don't really matter to anyone, anymore
But like a fool I keep losing my place
And I keep seeing you walk through that door

But there's a danger in loving somebody too much
And it's sad when you know it's your heart you cant trust
There's a reason why people don't stay where they are
Baby sometimes love just ain't enough

Now I could never change you
I don't wanna blame you
Baby you don't have to take the fall

Yes I may have hurt you
But I did not desert you
Maybe I just wanna have it all

It makes a sound like thunder
It makes me feel like rain
And like a fool who will never see the truth
I keep thinking something's gonna change

But there's a danger in loving somebody too much
And it's sad when you know it's your heart you cant trust
There's a reason why people don't stay where they are
Baby sometimes love just ain't enough

And there's no way home
When its late at night and you're all alone
Are there things that you wanted to say
Do you feel me beside you in your bed
There beside you where I used to lay

And there's a danger in loving somebody too much
And it's sad when you know it's your heart they cant touch
There's a reason why people don't stay who they are
Cause baby sometimes love just ain't enough
Baby sometimes love just ain't enough

I find that I still care much about her. My heart missed a beat when I saw that her Friendster account status read 'Single' on her relationship column. Well.. it has always been single, but actually she is already attached. Perhaps she doesn't want the world to know.

It's 10:10pm and I have not eaten dinner! No one cooked, no one bought back. Now, I gotta go out with Stanley and Kelvin to eat. I am starved! I went to fetch Mum from work coz Dad just had a mini operation on his right eye. He is ok but I thought it would be good if I let him rest and take on some driving responsibilities since now I am a qualified driver.

Monday, August 2

Sunnyday

Woke up to a tan skin and a tired body. Felt dried out and a tingle in the throat. For those who watched the highlights on the evening news, it was a spectacular display of fireworks wasn't it? That was only 75% of what you will see on the actual day itself. The amount of fireworks used on the preview is only 75% of what will be used on 9th August. No point using more on a preview.

And.. heh.. forgot to mention about the balloon. Remember last year's NDP? There was this part towards the middle of the show when hundreds of giant balloons are being dropped down the stand. Well, this year's balls are sports-theme. I managed to get hold of one, deflated it, and under the cover of darkness, sneaked it into my bag. Haha. I gave it to my dear sister as a present. Cool eh?

Did some mainteinance at home. Vaccumed the floor, tidied up the room and cleared out the rubbish. Went out to play pool with my friends. We had a challenge and well, i won, but not without a hard fight. Played for about 3 hours and 30 rounds. Tiring marathon challenge. It was by then about 8pm. Went for dinner. Had fish steamboat. The thick slices of tender meat is simply out of this world. So is the delicious soup. Headed home after that. It is a long day after a strenuous day yesterday.

Reached home at 11:30. Bathe, update Blog, prepare for work tomorrow. Duty tomorrow. Monday duty always suck. Hope not much work lying in wait.

National Day Peview

The morning is a total washout. Rained from 9am.Heavy showers with thunderstorm is the weather forecast. And it was true to its words. Just had to wait patiently under the stage for the rain to clear before any work can commence. They say a rainy national day preview is the omen to a good weather actual day parade. I don't know how true that saying is. You can be witness to those words. The rain just keeps getting heavier by the minute.

The rain started to flow beneath the elevated wooden benches we sat on. We had to shift our bags in a maze of wires, cables and scaffoldings. Movement was difficult and restricted in the small and dangerous working environment under the stage. I was with a group of people I would not have known if I had not been in the army. But somehow we came together from different parts of our world and gather in unity for the country's birthday. A band of brothers indeed. Haha.

The amount of wiring in the stadium is unbelievable. There's gotta be a thousand miles of cables in and around the stadium. There is a long main cable connecting the fireworks located outside the stadium in a tennis court to the main control in the stadium. The fireworks in the court are those big ones that goes off at the end of the show. That main cable connects all the fireworks and is responsible for synchronizing all the others.

It is now 1pm and 5 hours til showtime. The rain is thinning and the performers are out to test their gear and stretch theirs legs. They have been here early and being cooped up for hours. They are eager to perform after months of hard practise. The band is out playing, the cheerleaders are out dancing. So many pretty faces around. There is a real festive feel around. The atmosphere is building up. Cant wait for the show to start.

3pm. 3 hours before showtime. The crowd is starting to fill up the stands. Dressed in patriotic red, families of four, five came early to catch the last minute preparation by the performers.

90 minutes prior to showtime. Jay Jay Lin Jun Jie and Kit Chan arrived for some last minute rehearsal. The choir girls were waving mad at him. For me, I find more interest in his female assistant. The stadium is only a third full with the crowd coming in slow but steadily. Thanks to the hundreds of marshallers and ushers, crowd control is in tip top form. The stage is set for the biggest show this year.

Showtime! And the party is underway! The hosts, Gurmit Singh, Sharon Au, Jean Deanker and some others I forgot who, entered the arena to thunderous applause. But the stadium is not filled yet. Due to the slow and steady approach by the ushers, the spectators were coming in slower than estimated. They gotta speed up on the real day. The stadium was only two-third full. Nonetheless, I am gonna enjoy the preview.

First up are the motivators! Dancing to 'Loud' by Pink. Next are the mass performances by students from boon lay sec sch. Followed by a video on the country's progress and an intro to total defence. Then you look up to the sky and you see five prarchutees each carrying a banner with the five aspects of total defence flying down. This segment never fails to fascinates. What follows are events not seen before at any previous parade. To know what lies await, be sure to watch the real thing!
